Hello again!

With spring upon us, it's great to see 'new shoots' bursting through across all areas of the business, from the printing plant here in Frome, to our new website and the many fantastic print projects we have completed since our last newsletter. It has been particularly pleasing to see so many of you visiting us - we really value your feedback on our progress and on all aspects of the business, so please keep it coming.

We have achieved many milestones already, most recently with confirmation of the ISO14001 environmental accreditation. This is fantastic news and re-affirms on many levels, our path to a truly sustainable business.

Capital investment into the business continues and in addition, we have continued to upgrade and develop much of our existing equipment. We are already looking ahead to 2009 being a busy year and with our flexible capacity we are confident we can meet the demands placed upon us from all of our valued customers.

I hope you will enjoy this second issue of expression and it will give you a small insight into what's happening here at Butler Tanner & Dennis.

Improving the customer experience

As anybody who has recently visited the factory will testify - we have started to make considerable improvements to the customer facilities.

The bold red exterior signage now reflects our new identity and our reception area has been transformed into a more welcoming and comfortable environment. Not that receptionists Jean and Beth are anything less than welcoming!

These improvements are part of an ongoing strategy in the coming months to improve the customer experience and will include further enhancements to our customer meeting rooms.

100

100 years at Caxton Road!

We are pleased to announce that 2009 signifies 100 years of printing and binding at the Caxton Road site. Recent research into our history has also unearthed the fact that we can now trace our roots in Frome back to 1845, making the company 164 years old. There is a famous saying, 'Anyone who closes their eyes to the past is blind to the present'.

For further information please see the heritage section of our website.

Environment
ISO badge

ISO 14001 confirmed

From its inception BT&D has strived to be an environmentally aware company.

In August 2008, we achieved FSC & PEFC accreditation, and since then have worked with our suppliers and partners to source products that have less of an impact on the environment, and looking at ways to reduce transport and packaging.

Whilst implementing the environmental management system, we have been able to take a close look at our working practises and just by making some slight changes this has resulted in some big reductions in our waste and energy usage.

Our workforce involvement and initiatives have been a crucial element in the success of achieving ISO accreditation.

During our first eight months of trading we have carefully collated enough information to enable us to gain baseline data against which we will be setting our future environmental standards and objectives. We have already streamlined our factory and workflow systems and relocated machinery to reduce the amount of internal forklift journeys, heating and lighting.

Being awarded this important ISO accreditation, enables us to tender for work with environmentally conscious customers, provides us with new business opportunities and moves us ever closer to our goal of Carbon neutrality.

Reorganisation at Caxton Road

We have some key developments to tell you about.

Pre press, CTP and digital are currently being moved into a new purpose built area within the factory and key workflow and output devices are now situated in one department. This reorganisation programme also provides the potential for further growth and expansion in the future.

Our Case making and blocking lines have also been sited closer to the bindery to improve productivity and workflow.

Digital is back!

We are pleased to announce that we have signed a new workflow and CTP deal with Kodak. The Prinergy 5 workflow will be installed in May and the Magnus CTP in July. The Nexpress is already up and running with impressive results.

Just a few of the customer benefits:

Kodak's colour and trapping technology has been upgraded. A web-based browser will allow production sales and customer service personnel to have live access to job information and status.

All prepress personnel can create and view notes added to a job during handling and will also be able to add additional information to jobs, pages or signatures, such as text, dates/times and yes/no fields.

The new equipment will also be able to cut and collate the pages from fully imposed flat sheets and send them to a printer in reader order.

Insite - a web based job submission and approval system, allowing automation, tracking and book proofing on screen is also to be installed.

The Magnus VLF is a market leader in plate production. High levels of automation and laser technology will bring us true benefits in plate production and quality.

The Magnus VLF delivers punched plates, ensuring the image position fits perfectly every time, making a marked improvement to make ready times on press.

All aspects including the latest thermal plates are manufactured, supplied and supported by Kodak personnel from their UK base. The updated Prinergy workflow, will provide the flexibility to print litho or digital using the same file. This provides consistency in product ranging from 1 to 100,000 copies.

A back up server, two processors, and two plate setters are included in the new system to ensure we will not suffer loss of production due to failure of one part of the process.

New sheet fed blocker

We have installed B1 foil blocking and embossing technology that will complete the production of covers and jackets in one area of the factory, providing greater speed, flexibility, control and no wasted transport.
